Extending from the border of Georgia to Mingachevir, this vast territory served as a crucial geographical area for human movement, settlement, and the formation of various cultural ties in ancient times. Located within the Aghstafa district segment of Jeyranchol, the “Keshikchidag” State Historical and Cultural Reserve—established by Decree No. 2563 of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on December 19, 2007—preserves vital monuments of our ancient history. Numerous Bronze and Early Iron Age kurgans have been recorded within the reserve’s territory. Archaeological investigations in areas such as Ceyranchukhur, Sariyokhush, Karvandaresi, Garasoy, Sarisoy, Yovshanlidere, and Galtan Duzu have identified over a hundred kurgan monuments. During archaeological excavations conducted between 2022 and 2024 in the kurgans of Karvandaresi at Keshikchidag, rich material culture samples belonging to antiquity were uncovered. Among these finds, clay vessels, beads, a bronze bracelet, gold ornaments, as well as obsidian and bronze arrowheads attract particular interest. The core focus of the research involves weapon specimens known in scientific literature as “Scythian-type arrowheads.” These arrowheads provide essential data regarding the combat technology, metalworking skills, military culture of ancient populations, and their interregional connections. The specimens recovered from the Karvandaresi kurgans include arrowheads crafted from both obsidian and bronze. The surface of the obsidian arrowhead features specialized craftsmanship, while the bronze specimens possess two-winged, leaf-shaped structures with socketed bases. Elemental analyses revealed tin content in some of the bronze arrowheads, indicating the mastery of specific technological knowledge in alloy preparation and weaponry production during ancient times. The burial chamber uncovered in Kurgan No. 1 also provides significant archaeological data. Alongside a human skeleton, the chamber yielded the skull of a horse (or equid), ceramic vessel fragments, beads, a bronze bracelet, gold items, and four three-winged arrowheads. The neat, parallel arrangement of the arrowheads—facing the exact same direction—suggests they were originally stored in a specific quiver. Furthermore, preserved traces of wooden shafts inside the sockets offer a clearer picture of how these weapons were assembled and used. These artifacts represent more than isolated weapon samples they are valuable sources of information on the worldview, burial customs, economic activities, and social structures of the people who inhabited this region millennia ago. The burial traditions and traces related to the horse cult observed in the kurgans carry immense importance for understanding the cultural traits of that epoch.
